Graduate Study

  • Required Curriculum
    Credit Requirements for Graduation: 
    Postgraduate students in the Masters program must reach the minimum of 32 credits. Students in the Ph. D program (including Masters-Ph. D transfers) must reach the minimum of 44 credits, and must participate in seminars every semester until reaching the fifth year. These credits do not include the master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

    Study Period: 
    Our department’s study period for the MA degree is 1 to 4 years; for the Ph. D degree, it’s 2-7 years.

    Other Requirements: 
    (一) Ph. D students who enrolled after the 2014 school year, must have certification of TOEFL iBT 79 or higher (or CBT TOEFL 213 or higher; or PBT TOEFL 550 or higher) before graduation. Students can also take the Online English Program (III) course of the university instead.

    Masters- PhD Transfers:
    For MA students that wish to transfer to the Ph. D program, the requirements include studying for a year on the MA program, class ranks in the top one-third of the class for two semesters, or other special circumstances that the department appraise to be of excellence performance. Students interested for the application of transferring should fill out the “National Taiwan University PhD Transfer Application” (國立台灣大學逕修博士學位申請書; available at the department office), and submit a report card of at least one year of grades from the Masters program as well as recommendation letters from at least two professors.  The application should be submitted before the school year ends (July 31).

    The studying period begins from the time of entering the Ph. D program.
